As work progressed on Harvesting Memories in Blue, Sherry started exploring how to light the sculpture. The plan called for solar lighting—and as she experimented she was entranced by the shadows that were cast by the woven denim. Adding motion to the lights by manually rotating them around the work made the shadows truly come to life. While the limitations of an outdoor setting (as well as budget constraints) meant that moving lights were not going to be possible in the full size sculpture, she could not shake her obsession with the dynamic shadows. And so was born the Gobo Edition of the sculpture. It is a half-size version that includes moving colored lights that are controlled by a custom programmed Arduino microcomputer. Sherry looks forward to exploring more lighting possibilities in her future work. Photo by Jeanne Brako.
